The Public at Large is completely unaware of what is going on in the jewelry industry. We are going to bring you some of the more pertinent news bits and stories. All the interesting "Stuff" that you should know .

MOISSANITE is here.

C3 Inc., the creator of diamond look-alike synthetic Moissanite received a U.S. patent for their product.
The stones are so convincing that most jewelers will not be able to tell them from diamonds. In fact they even fool the thermal testers now used to give a diamond reading.
The stones are retailing at approximately 5% to 10% of a comparable diamond. According to C3, the target retail price for a 1 carat stone is in the $400 to $600 range. At this time, most of the production will be in the 1/4  to 1.50 carat range.
The quality range of the commercial production is reported to be anywhere from VS1 to eye-clean between G to L in color, D to F color stones are not expected any time soon.
Already, the Discovery Channel and ABC World News Tonight showed some jewelers misidentifying Synthetic MOISSANITE as Diamonds.
Pawnshops all over the country took losses already and are on the lookout.
The lab created MOISSANITE (Crystal Silicon Carbide) rivals the diamond in brilliance and is second in hardness ( 9,25 to 9.5 Moh's ) only to diamond.

Prime Time Live TV Expose

The jewelry industry is a favorite target of TV exposé's. The latest in early February. "Prime Time Live" reported at least six examples of synthetic gems being sold as real.

Reporters for "Prime Time Live" claimed this happened at a variety of stores, including the "biggies" J.C. Penney, Service Merchandise and even at the exclusive Bergdorf Goodman. Even TV anchor Diane Sawyers necklace, given to her by her husband, contained synthetic rubies. This is the second gemstone related expose since December, when Dateline NBC reported on undisclosed gem treatments and diamond scams. Few jewelers passed the test and misrepresentation was the order of the day at most of the visited stores.

Radioactive Cat's Eye Stones

According to industry sources, hundreds of highly radioactive chrysoberyl cat's eye gem stones are sold in some Asian markets.

These stones are bombarded in an atomic reactor to enhance the color of $200 per carat stones to a more desirable honey-brown worth $1,500 per carat or more, and as a result the radiation is more than 50 times greater than acceptable U.S. limits. Exposure to such high levels of radiation could cause all kinds of health problems, including skin-cancer.

According to reports these stones have been in circulation in Indonesia, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Japan since April of 97.

Laser drilling the Diamond

Did you know that the Federal Trade Commission has determined that fracture-filling a diamond has to be disclosed, however, lasering a diamond to remove carbon is considered a permanent treatment, hence, no disclosure is needed.     Scary? Yes?
