For thousands of years, gemstones have been attributed mythical, magical and supernatural powers and properties. The association of specific gemstones with the months of the year has a long history going back to the breastplate of Aaron, brother of Moses. More recently, the custom of wearing birthstone jewelry originated in Poland in the 1700s and by 1912 the first official list of birthstones in the United States was adopted by the National Association of Jewelers.
